About Food Labels
Food labels are working labels. They go on cookie bags at a farmers market, deli containers in a grocery case, stand-up pouches of granola, jars of salsa and clamshells of cut fruit. Besides showing your brand, they usually carry a product name, net weight, ingredients, allergen statement and business contact details, so the layout has to balance appetite appeal with a lot of required text.
Plan the information panel first
Start with the words that must appear, then design around them. Many producers split the job into a front label for brand and flavor and a second back or side label for ingredients and nutrition information. That approach keeps the front clean and lets you reuse one back label format across flavors. The exact wording required for your product depends on what you sell and where, so confirm it with your local regulator or a food business advisor; our review covers print readiness, resolution and bleed rather than legal content.
Matching the label to the container
- Jar lids and deli tubs: round labels sized just inside the lid edge.
- Pouches and bakery bags: rectangles placed on the flat front panel, clear of seals and zippers.
- Clamshells and trays: long rectangles that can run across the opening as a closure seal.
- Signature treats: die-cut shapes that echo the product, such as a cookie, pepper or loaf outline.
Preserves and pickles have their own considerations, covered on our canning labels page, and specialty cheese makers can see cheese labels.
Refrigeration, handling and flavor runs
Food packaging often gets chilled, wiped, stacked with condensation or handled with greasy hands. Tell us how your product is stored and sold when you request a quote so we can discuss materials sensibly instead of guessing. If you make several flavors, list each design and its quantity; seasonal items can be added as separate designs in the same request. Send dimensions, shape, total quantity, the container type and your artwork, and we will review the file, email a PDF proof and print after you approve it.
Food Labels questions, answered
What should a small food business put on its labels?
Typically the product name, net quantity, ingredients, allergens and your business name and address, plus any claims you choose to make. Requirements vary by product type and state, so check them with a local food authority or advisor before finalizing artwork. We print exactly what your approved proof shows.
Should I use one food label or separate front and back labels?
Two labels work well when you have lots of required text or several flavors. The front carries brand and flavor, while a shared back label holds ingredients and contact details. One wrap-around label suits cylindrical jars and bottles where the text can continue around the curve.
How do I size a label for a jar lid or deli container?
Measure the flat top of the lid, not the outer rim, and choose a round label slightly smaller than that diameter so it does not run over the edge. For deli tubs, check whether the lid has a raised ring and size the label to fit inside it.
Which label material suits chilled or oily foods?
It depends on the container, the temperature and how the product is handled. Tell us whether the item goes in a cooler case, collects condensation or gets touched with greasy fingers, and our team will discuss suitable materials and finishes with you before quoting the order.

What Our Customers Say
Real reviews, quoted exactly as published on ProvenExpert.
I have been looking for a company that could provide quality water proof labels for a very long time. I stumbled across Print Design & Tech R US LTD via Google searching, last year October 2024. Since then I have used them another 3 times and we will continue to do so. Olivia and her team are fantastic, from the proofing, making a phone call to ensure the correct information. The quality of the labels are just what we have been looking for. Keep up the great work Ken
Brian Smith and his Manager and staff have been amazing with implementing our label designs and preparing the items. We receive regular updates on the progress of the printing stages and Brian is more than happy to make changes to our labels. highly recommend.
I agree with the many comments already written. They accomomated my slightly unusual order and even over the Thanksgiving holidays were very responsive and kept the ball rolling. Good job everyone! Norm
