About Canning Labels

Home canning produces rows of identical jars, and a label is what tells the strawberry jam from the pepper jelly six months later. Canning labels are ordered by backyard gardeners putting up tomatoes, cottage food sellers at farmers markets, church and school groups preparing fundraiser jars, and small producers stocking local shops. Lids, sides or both

A mason jar offers two label spots. The lid is visible when jars are stored in a cupboard or stacked in a crate, and a round label there lets you keep the glass clear to show off the color of the preserves. The side panel has more room for a name, ingredients and your logo. Regular and wide mouth lids are different diameters, so measure both if you use both, and check for embossed patterns on the glass that break up the smooth area.

Jars that get wet or chilled

Filled jars are often wiped down, moved to a refrigerator after opening or carried to a humid outdoor market. Mention those conditions when you request a quote, and we will talk through paper and vinyl with you. Labels go on more smoothly once jars have cooled and the glass is fully dry.

Should a canning label go on the lid or the side of the jar?

Lid labels are handy for jars stored on pantry shelves where only the top is visible, and they keep the glass clear so the contents show. Side labels give more room for a name, ingredients and your brand. Many home canners and market sellers use both.

How do I size labels for regular and wide mouth jars?

Measure the flat center of the lid insert or band top on each jar type you use, because the two mouth sizes differ. For side labels, measure the smooth panel between any embossed pattern and the shoulder, then list each size separately in your request.

Can I leave space to write the batch date on each jar?

Yes. Many canners design a small blank line for the date or batch number. Tell us you want a writable area and mention the pen or marker you plan to use, so we can talk through which material and finish will take the ink.

What do farmers market sellers usually include on canning labels?

Most include the product name, main ingredients, net weight or volume, and the business name with a way to reach them. Check which statements your state requires for home-produced or small-batch foods, because we print the wording you approve exactly as sent.
