About Die Cut Stickers

A die cut sticker follows the edge of your design instead of sitting inside a plain rectangle or circle. The cut line traces a mascot's silhouette, the curve of a wordmark or the outline of a product illustration, so the sticker itself takes the shape of the thing it shows. Brands use them as package inserts and giveaways, bands and artists sell them at merch tables, and makers add them to orders as a small extra.

Deciding where the cut line goes

The first choice is how closely the cut should hug the artwork. A tight contour works for bold, simple shapes. Designs with thin details, such as script lettering, antlers or loose hand-drawn strokes, usually look cleaner with a border around them, which keeps small points from being trimmed off and gives the sticker a stronger edge to peel from. If you are unsure, say so and our design team will suggest an outline when they review your file.

  • Tight contour: the edge sits right against the artwork, suited to solid logos and icons.
  • Offset border: a band of background color or clear area surrounds the design.
  • Simplified outline: a smooth shape that ignores tiny gaps between letters or elements.

Material and finish questions to settle early

Many customers ask for vinyl die cut stickers for water bottles, notebooks and tool cases, while paper suits short-lived uses such as event handouts. Clear material lets the surface show through around the design. You can ask for gloss or matte, and if the stickers will face rain or regular washing, mention it in your request so we can talk through options.

Preparing a file that cuts cleanly

Mark the die cut path with a 1mm black line on its own layer and send .cdr or .eps artwork in CMYK at 300 dpi with 3mm bleed on each side. The bleed matters on shaped stickers, because color that stops exactly at the cut can leave a thin unprinted edge. Our artwork file guide walks through the setup, and if you only have a PNG or a sketch, the team can help rebuild it.

When you request a quote, list the finished width and height, the number of different designs, the quantity of each, the material and where the stickers will be applied. You will receive a PDF proof showing the cut line, and printing begins once you approve it.

FAQs

Die Cut Stickers questions, answered

What kinds of designs work well as die cut stickers?

Logos with a clear silhouette, characters, mascots, product illustrations and short bold words all translate well. Designs made of many separate pieces, such as scattered stars or text with wide letter spacing, are usually joined by a background shape so the sticker stays in one piece. Our designers can suggest a border when they review your file.

Should my die cut sticker have a border around the design?

A border helps when the artwork has fine points or thin lines that would be fragile if the cut followed them exactly. Solid, chunky logos can be cut close to the edge. A border in a contrasting color also helps the design read on dark laptops or bottles. Tell us which look you prefer and it will appear on the proof.

Can one die cut request include several different sticker shapes?

Tell us how many separate designs you need and the quantity of each when you ask for pricing. Each design gets its own cut path, so send every file with its outline marked. Merch sellers often combine a main logo sticker with a few character or slogan designs in the same request.

Where do people usually put die cut stickers?

Common spots include laptops, water bottles, phone cases, skateboards, guitar cases, notebooks and shipping mailers. Businesses also tuck them into orders or hand them out at trade shows and markets. Knowing the surface helps us recommend a material, so mention whether the sticker goes on smooth plastic, metal, glass or paper.
