About Barcode Labels

A barcode label has a job to do before it has a look to show off: a scanner at a register, a handheld in a stockroom or a phone camera has to read it. Retailers use barcode labels on product packaging, warehouses put them on bins and shelves, makers selling through stores add them next to the brand name, and offices tag equipment for asset tracking. This category lets you choose rectangular, square, round, die cut or fully custom barcode labels, all made to your measurements.

Where the barcode number comes from

We print the code you supply. If you sell through retailers, they will usually ask for a registered UPC, which you obtain yourself before ordering. Internal stock codes, asset tags and QR codes pointing to a web page can be generated by your own inventory or design software. Send the finished barcode as part of the artwork, or send the number and the symbology and ask our design team to place it.

Layout choices that affect scanning

  • Quiet zone: leave clear space on both sides of the bars, and do not let borders or text crowd them.
  • Contrast: dark bars on a white or very light background are the safest combination. Avoid red bars and busy patterns behind the code.
  • Size: shrinking a retail barcode too far makes the bars hard to read, so check your retailer's size requirements.
  • Curves: on narrow bottles or tubes, turning the code so the bars run horizontally keeps it on the flatter part of the curve.

Choosing the label shape

Rectangular labels suit most barcodes because the code itself is wide. Square labels pair well with QR codes. Round labels fit jar lids and tubes, but the barcode must stay inside the circle with room around it. Die cut shapes make sense when the barcode sits within a branded design. If you also need product labels carrying ingredients or descriptions, see our packaging labels. Paper and vinyl can both be requested; tell us whether labels will be handled in a cold room, a dusty warehouse or on a retail shelf so we can discuss the right one.

For a quote, send the label size and shape, the quantity, how many different codes are involved and a sample of the code. Every file is reviewed before printing, and you approve a PDF proof first.

FAQs

Barcode Labels questions, answered

Where do I get the barcode number for my product?

Retail products typically use a registered UPC that the brand owner obtains before ordering labels. Internal stock and asset codes can be generated by your inventory software. Include either the number with its barcode type or finished barcode artwork, and our team will place it on the layout.

Can one order include labels with different barcodes?

Tell us how many different codes you need and how many labels of each. A small range of product codes is a common request from makers with several flavors or sizes. If every single label must carry a unique number, mention that clearly so we can confirm how it can be handled.

Which label shape is right for a QR code?

Square labels are the natural fit because a QR code is square, and round labels can work if the code sits well inside the circle. Leave a clear border around the code and keep a short line of text, such as a prompt to scan, outside that border.

What should I consider for barcode labels used in a warehouse?

Think about what the label will stick to, such as cardboard, plastic totes or metal shelving, and whether it faces dust, cold rooms or frequent handling. Share those conditions when you ask for a quote. Larger bars and generous clear space also help handheld scanners read labels from a distance.

What Our Customers Say

I have been looking for a company that could provide quality water proof labels for a very long time. I stumbled across Print Design & Tech R US LTD via Google searching, last year October 2024. Since then I have used them another 3 times and we will continue to do so. Olivia and her team are fantastic, from the proofing, making a phone call to ensure the correct information. The quality of the labels are just what we have been looking for. Keep up the great work Ken
