About Packaging Labels

Where a sticker might simply decorate, a packaging label is usually expected to inform: product name, flavor or scent, size, directions, barcode and brand details.

Build a label system for your range

Brands with more than a handful of products save effort by treating labels as a family. Keep the logo, font and layout fixed, and let one element change for each variant, such as a color band, an icon or the product name. That makes it easy for a customer to find the right item on a shelf and for staff to pick the correct product in a stockroom. When you request a quote, list every variant as its own design with the quantity you expect to use, and flag which ones sell most.

Leave room for the details that change

Batch numbers and dates: leave a blank panel if you stamp or write them in later.
Net contents: place it where it will still be visible when products sit side by side.
Outer cartons: a larger label that shows contents and count for store partners and distributors.

Fitting the label to the package

Measure the flat face of each container type and note any curves, seams or embossing. Rectangles suit pouches and cartons, round labels fit tins and lids, square labels sit neatly on cube-shaped jars, and die-cut labels can follow an unusual container outline. What is the difference between packaging labels and packaging stickers?

Packaging labels usually carry product information such as the name, variant, size and barcode, and they stay on the product. Packaging stickers are more often decorative seals and thank-you designs that brand the shipment. Many businesses order both, with the same colors and logo tying them together.

How should I organize labels for many product variants?

Keep one fixed layout and change a single element per variant, like a color band or icon. Name your artwork files to match your product list and give each variant its own quantity in the quote request. This keeps the order clear and makes future reprints simpler.

Where should a barcode go on a packaging label?

On a flat part of the package that does not wrap around a tight curve or fold, with clear space around the code. On narrow bottles or tubes, consider a separate back label so the code sits on the flattest area. Print a sample and test it with a scanner before finalizing artwork.

Do I need a separate label for outer shipping cartons?

Often, yes. Store partners and warehouses want to see the contents, count and product code without opening the carton. A larger, simple rectangular label with bold text usually does that job, and it can use the same branding as the individual product labels inside.
